THE PROBLEM

A family of six lived in a 2800 square foot, two story home built in 1978.

Three children were sick with flu like symptoms as was one adult, with the addition of eye irritation and fatigue.

All strep tests were negative, and the family had been treated unsuccessfully by a physician for four months.

CASE STUDY: Sick House = Sick Family

FINDINGS

Previous homeowners had remodeled the second floor bathroom.

We found mold growth in an interior first floor wall cavity. This area was adjacent to the family room on the first floor.

During the second floor bath room remodel, the plumber had installed the wrong toilet flange to the wall mount toilet. There was a small sewage leak which had gone undetected.

WHAT THEY TRIED

The homeowners called in a mold specialist which was a contractor specializing in basement dewatering systems.

They quoted a $5000 interior basement dewatering system.

OUR RECOMMENDATIONS

We designed the protocol to safely remove the damaged walls so mold wouldn’t spread to other parts of the home during the renovation.

In a follow up three months after the repairs were done, all of the children’s symptoms had gone away and the adult was also feeling better.
