THE PROBLEM

A homeowner was concerned about the roof on his home rotting.

Just before Christmas, he went to the attic to get Christmas decorations and noticed a few small areas of mold on his roof sheeting. The contractor came and installed turbine style roof ventilators to remove the moisture.

CASE STUDY: Moisture in Attic/Contractor Adds Ventilation

THE FIX

Every time the wind blew, it created a negative pressure, pulling warm moist air from the house and basement into the attic.

Our suggestion was to block off the roof turbines and air seal all of the duct chase ways.

No follow up was needed. Problem solved!

After Christmas, while putting away the decorations, he saw the entire north roof structure was covered with mold.

The home was constructed in 1998.

WHAT WE DISCOVERED

Our findings indicated that there were large chase ways in the attic for the heating and air conditioning ducts to supply air to the second floor living area.

Pulling the fiberglass away from the ducts in the attic showed large chase ways into the buildings framework all the way to the basement.

Unfortunately, the contractor had installed both turbine roof ventilators directly above these chase ways.
